What is Yellow fever?

Yellow fever is a viral infection spread by mosquitoes, found in parts of Africa and South America. Most infections cause mild flu-like symptoms, but a small proportion progress to a more severe illness affecting the liver, causing jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), which gives the disease its name.

A safe and highly effective vaccine is available and is required for entry into some countries, or recommended for travel to certain regions, making pre-travel planning important.
