What is Urinary catheter?

A urinary catheter is a thin, flexible tube inserted into the bladder to drain urine, used when someone can't empty their bladder normally, needs precise urine output monitoring, or requires bladder drainage after surgery. Catheters can be temporary or, in some cases, longer-term.

Proper catheter care is important to prevent complications such as infection or blockage, and most people or their carers can be taught how to manage a catheter safely at home if needed long-term.
