What is Thumb and Wrist Pain After Having a Baby?

Pain around the thumb and wrist after having a baby, sometimes called De Quervain's tenosynovitis, is common and thought to relate to repetitive movements involved in caring for a newborn — particularly lifting a baby with a hand positioned in a certain way — combined with hormonal changes that can affect tendons after birth.

It typically causes pain along the thumb side of the wrist, worse with gripping or twisting movements, such as lifting the baby or wringing out a cloth. It usually improves over time, especially with some simple adjustments.
