What is Skin Problems During Pregnancy?

Pregnancy hormones can cause a range of skin changes, most of which are harmless. Common changes include darkening of the skin (especially the nipples, a line down the belly known as the linea nigra, and patches on the face called melasma), increased oiliness or dryness, and itching as the skin stretches.

Most pregnancy skin changes fade after birth, though some, like melasma, can take longer to resolve and may need protection from sun exposure. Occasionally, itching can be a sign of a liver condition specific to pregnancy, which needs medical attention.
