What is Rectal examination?

A rectal examination is a simple procedure in which a doctor gently inserts a gloved, lubricated finger into the rectum to check for abnormalities. It's commonly used to assess symptoms such as rectal bleeding, changes in bowel habit, or to examine the prostate gland in men.

The examination usually takes less than a minute and, while it can feel a little uncomfortable or embarrassing, it shouldn't be painful and provides valuable information that can guide diagnosis and treatment.
