What is Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)?

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal condition affecting how the ovaries work, often involving irregular or absent ovulation, higher levels of androgens (male hormones), and small fluid-filled sacs on the ovaries.

Common symptoms include irregular or absent periods, difficulty conceiving, excess hair growth, acne, and weight gain. PCOS is also linked to a higher risk of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes, so management often addresses both symptoms and longer-term health.
