What is Pneumonia in Babies and Children?

Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs, usually caused by a virus or bacteria, that leads to inflammation and fluid build-up in the small air sacs. Symptoms often include cough, fever, rapid or laboured breathing, and sometimes chest pain, and can range from mild to more serious.

Many cases, especially viral ones, can be managed at home with supportive care, while bacterial pneumonia is usually treated with antibiotics. Some children, especially babies and those with other health conditions, need hospital treatment.
