What is Nightmares and night terrors in adults?

Nightmares are vivid, disturbing dreams that wake you feeling frightened or distressed, usually during the lighter, dream-heavy stages of sleep. Night terrors are different: they involve sudden episodes of intense fear, screaming, or thrashing during deep sleep, with little or no memory of them afterwards.

Both can be triggered by stress, anxiety, irregular sleep, alcohol, certain medications, or underlying mental health conditions such as PTSD. Occasional episodes are common, but frequent or distressing occurrences can affect sleep quality and daytime wellbeing.
