What is Newborn hearing screening?

Newborn hearing screening is a quick, painless test offered to babies shortly after birth to check for hearing loss. Around one to two babies in every thousand are born with some degree of permanent hearing loss, and early detection allows support to begin as early as possible.

The test is usually carried out using a small soft-tipped earpiece that measures the ear's response to gentle clicking sounds, and takes just a few minutes per ear while your baby is settled or asleep.
