What is Necrotising fasciitis?

Necrotising fasciitis is a rare but very serious bacterial infection that destroys the tissue beneath the skin, including fat and the tissue surrounding muscles. It can spread extremely quickly and can be life-threatening if not treated as an emergency.

It can develop after a cut, burn, insect bite, or surgical wound, though sometimes there's no obvious break in the skin. Early symptoms can resemble a less serious infection, which makes prompt recognition important.
