What is Mastitis While Breastfeeding?

Mastitis is inflammation of breast tissue, sometimes with an infection, that can develop while breastfeeding, often from a blocked duct that hasn't cleared. It typically causes a red, painful, swollen area of the breast, sometimes alongside fever and flu-like symptoms.

It usually responds well to continued feeding and simple measures, though a course of antibiotics is sometimes needed if an infection is present. Mastitis can feel alarming, but it's very treatable and doesn't need to mean stopping breastfeeding.
