What is Flat Feet in Children?

Flat feet, where the arch of the foot appears low or absent when standing, are extremely common in young children and are usually a normal part of development, since the arch often doesn't fully form until around age 6 to 8. Most children with flat feet have no pain and don't need any treatment.

For the small number of children whose flat feet cause discomfort or affect their walking, a podiatrist or doctor can assess whether any specific intervention, such as supportive footwear or, occasionally, orthotics, would be helpful.
