What is Excessive Thirst?

Excessive thirst that's persistent and out of proportion to activity, heat, or salt intake can sometimes be a sign of an underlying condition, most notably diabetes, where high blood sugar draws fluid from the body's tissues and triggers increased thirst alongside more frequent urination.

Occasional thirst after exercise, hot weather, or salty food is normal and not a concern, but persistent, unexplained excessive thirst — especially alongside other symptoms — is worth having checked by a doctor.
