What is Ear Infections?

Ear infections commonly affect the middle ear (otitis media) or the outer ear canal (otitis externa, sometimes called "swimmer's ear"), causing pain, sometimes discharge, and occasionally temporary hearing changes. They're especially common in young children but can affect people of any age.

Many ear infections, particularly viral middle ear infections, improve on their own within a few days, while bacterial infections may need antibiotics if they don't settle or are more severe.
