What is Diabetic Retina Screening?
Diabetic RetinaScreen is Ireland's national screening programme for people with diabetes, checking for diabetic retinopathy — damage to the blood vessels in the retina caused by high blood sugar over time. Since retinopathy often causes no symptoms until it's quite advanced, regular screening is the main way to catch it early, when treatment is most effective at protecting sight.
The screening involves a simple photograph of the back of the eyes using a digital camera, usually offered annually to everyone with diabetes from age 12 upward. If changes are found, you'll be referred for further assessment or treatment as needed.

- 4Report any sudden vision changes promptly.Don't wait for your next scheduled screening if you notice blurring, spots, or vision loss.
