What is Depression?

Depression is more than ordinary sadness — it involves a persistent low mood, loss of interest or pleasure in activities, and often changes in sleep, appetite, energy, and concentration, lasting most of the day, most days, for two weeks or more. It can affect anyone, at any age, regardless of life circumstances.

Depression is one of the most common mental health conditions and is highly treatable. A combination of talking therapy, lifestyle support, and, for many people, medication leads to significant improvement, and most people recover well with the right support.
