What is COVID-19 (Coronavirus)?

COVID-19 is a respiratory illness caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, with symptoms ranging from mild (such as a cough, sore throat, or loss of taste or smell) to more severe illness affecting the lungs, particularly in older adults or those with certain underlying health conditions. Most people recover at home within one to two weeks.

Vaccination remains an important tool for reducing the risk of severe illness, and specific antiviral treatments are available for people at higher risk of complications, if given early in the illness.
