What is Cervical Screening - CervicalCheck?

CervicalCheck is Ireland's national cervical screening programme, offering regular screening tests to eligible women and people with a cervix, aimed at detecting HPV infection and early cell changes before they can develop into cervical cancer. The test involves a simple sample taken from the cervix during a short appointment.

The sample is first checked for HPV, the virus responsible for almost all cervical cancers. If HPV is found, the same sample is then checked for cell changes, which, if present, can usually be monitored or treated before they ever become cancerous.
