What is Back Pain in Pregnancy?

Back pain is very common during pregnancy, affecting most people at some point. It happens as hormones loosen the ligaments supporting the spine and pelvis in preparation for birth, while growing weight and a shifting centre of gravity put extra strain on the lower back.

It usually develops in the lower back but can also affect the upper back, especially as the bump grows and posture changes. While uncomfortable, it's rarely a sign of a problem with the pregnancy itself.
